It should let you install it, but will not authorize it after a certain number of times which in most cases is 2. I heard from a friend that when you try to install auto CAD on more then one computer it tells you that you have all ready installed it and it won't let you finish installing it. I was just wondering how the cd could know that it was installed if you do not have a read write CD drive and you are not connected to the internet.

The new authorization process for ACAD 2005 has been used in Europe for the past five years, with much success. This is what it does: After installing the program from the CD and typing in the Serial Number from on the box, you must authorize the product. To do so, you must follow the on screen menus and fill out all the appropriate information like name and location. Once you have completed the forms, you send this information, along with your serial number and a generated request code to the Autodesk servers to get you AUTHORIZATION CODE. When you send this information via the internet, you are also sending information about some hardware within your computer (Hard Drive info and MAC Address).

The server will send you back and Authorization Code that is self installed in your system. Now Autodesk nows which system has that specific CD installed on it. If you try to install the same CD on another computer Autodesk will not authorize the product because it is registered to another computer. Therefore, you can only install the application once. But since most people work from home and in the office, you can actually store it on two computers, as long as they are not both running ACAD at the same time, this is legal.

If your hard drive fails or NIC goes, you must contact Autodesk to update them as well. For the standalone license, there is no dependency on the network card or MAC address. You can change them, or not even have a NIC, without affecting the license.

Hard disks other than the boot disk can similarly be changed at will. For more info, see the FAQ and white papers here: -Cy- 'Mrotolo' wrote in message news:218878141216.JavaMail.jive@jiveforum1.autodesk.com.

If your hard drive fails or NIC goes, you must contact Autodesk to update them as well. Yup, but there's ways around that. If you can export your license to another PC and 'park' it, you can bring it back without a reauth. Details in a tech doc in the Autodesk Knowledgebase. The problem is, of course, that there's no way to determine, in software, that the PC's outer cabinet hasn't been changed.You. know it's 'the same PC', and you only switched the boot disk, but after all, what exactly is 'the same PC'? It's like the old story about the ax.

The guy says: 'Best ax I ever owned, top quality. Had it 40 years. Only changed the head twice and the handle four times, but it works just like new!' -Cy- 'scott mceachron' wrote in message news:40b9707b3@newsprd01. The key in your note, however, is 'boot disk.'

The only NIC dependency is for the network version, and then only for the server PC.Cy- 'Mrotolo' wrote in message news:54033209102.JavaMail.jive@jiveforum1.autodesk.com. The machine ID mentioned on the Autodesk Activation web site is actually generated by a person computer's hard drive physical information and MAC address. Autodesk does not have your exact information but the machine code is created from this information.

That is why you must contact Autodesk when replacing either your NIC or H/D.
